Before you begin
- A supported iPhone, iPad or Mac Catalyst build and a compatible receiver.
- A network and permissions that allow sender and receiver communication.
Check the sender, receiver and connection
Casting asks another device to play the video you selected in Odyssey. The receiving television or Chromecast must be able to reach the prepared stream and handle its format. A video working on your phone does not prove that the receiver can play it.
The verified sender implementation covers iPhone and iPad, plus the Mac Catalyst app. It does not establish an Apple TV sender flow. Keep the sending device and receiver on a network where they can discover and reach each other, and allow Local Network access when the system requests it.
You still need authorised access to the source. Casting does not add content rights or make a private server reachable outside its network.
Open Play on a TV
- Start the intended video in Odyssey.
- Reveal the player controls and select the TV action when it is available.
- In Play on a TV, choose the supported route for your receiver.
- Keep Odyssey open while preparing and establishing the connection. Some sources depend on a local connection supplied by the sending device.
If the TV action is not available for the current playback session, this guide does not imply there is a hidden universal casting switch. Try a supported source or continue watching locally.
Connect through AirPlay
- Choose Prepare AirPlay.
- Wait for preparation. Playback stays on the sending device until the TV connection is established.
- Use Choose AirPlay TV when it appears and choose the intended receiver.
- Confirm that the receiving screen has the picture and sound before leaving the controls.
If the selected downloaded subtitle cannot be prepared with that source, the sheet may offer AirPlay without downloaded subtitles. Choosing it deliberately omits that separate subtitle file. The implementation requires an HLS source for this downloaded-subtitle route; HLS is a segmented streaming format, not a quality rating.
Connect through Chromecast
On iPhone and iPad builds with the Chromecast integration, use the Chromecast device control. If a Cast session is already connected, the sheet can show Play on connected Chromecast.
On the Mac Catalyst route, select Chromecast · Open Chrome. In the page that opens, choose your TV with the Cast button. Keep both Odyssey and that browser window open. The browser route uses its own playback controls; it should not be described as the same native picker shown on a phone.
Control playback and return
While the remote route is active, Odyssey presents Playing on your TV · Controls. Open it to see the current state. Supported non-browser routes include playback and seek controls. Choose Return to this device to bring playback back.
The Chrome page uses Return to Odyssey. The sheet's Done button closes the controls; it is not the same action as returning playback. Use the explicit return control when you intend to stop the remote session.
Move an evening film to the television
You begin a film on an iPad, then decide to use the living-room AirPlay TV. Open Play on a TV, prepare AirPlay and select that television. Once the TV picture appears, leave Odyssey open. Later, use Return to this device to continue on the iPad.
If the connection fails before the receiver starts, read the preparation message and check the local video still plays. This separates receiver preparation from an unavailable source without claiming that either layer is automatically repaired.
If the TV does not appear or playback fails
- No receiver: check receiver power, network membership and Local Network permission. Guest networks can isolate devices even when their Wi-Fi names look similar.
- Preparation fails: keep the error wording and identify the source route. Some formats cannot be prepared for the selected receiver.
- Picture without the downloaded subtitles: check whether you chose the subtitle-free AirPlay option, then consider an embedded track.
- Playback stops when the sender closes: reopen the sender and establish the route again. Keep Odyssey and the required browser page open for local relay routes.
Is casting a Watch Party? No. Casting sends your playback to a receiver. Watch Party coordinates supported shared viewing and has its own entry points and requirements.
