Before you begin
- An active Odyssey profile and authorised access to a connected source.
Start with the clearest clue
Use Search when you know a title, a person or part of what you want to watch. The search field says Search movies, series, channels, sports…. Results depend on your connected sources, metadata services, active profile and current filters.
A result describes a title or event; it does not grant playback access. Odyssey supplies no media. Before treating a poster as an available film, open its detail screen and check that an authorised source can play it.
Run a focused search
- Open Search from the app's navigation.
- Enter the title or person name you know. For an ambiguous title, add its year when useful and check the result's year before opening it.
- On Apple TV, submit the search using the native search interface, then move focus into the results. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, use the platform's search field and results controls.
- Open the matching result. For a series, confirm the season and episode in its detail screen.
- If the answer is not clear, open the search filter control and narrow one condition at a time.
Recent searches may be offered as shortcuts. On Mac Catalyst, the implementation can show a separate Recent Searches list. Selecting a previous query reruns that query; it does not freeze the earlier results.
Use Search Filters deliberately
The Search Filters sheet offers Sources, Year, Genre and Availability. Choose a specific connected source only when you mean to restrict the search to it. A previously selected source that is no longer present can appear as Source Unavailable.
Availability offers All Titles and In Library. These are different discovery scopes, not different subscription levels. In Library is useful when you want to concentrate on the connected catalogue. All Titles can include wider discovery results where the configured services support them.
Choose Apply to commit the filter changes. Cancel leaves the draft unapplied. To broaden the search again, choose Reset Filters, then Apply. Check for a restrictive year or source before concluding a title has disappeared.
Find a remake without opening the original
You remember a film name shared by two releases. Search the title, open Search Filters and choose the year of the version you want. Apply the change, then inspect the result's artwork, year and synopsis. If it does not appear, reset the year and compare the broader results in case the source metadata is incomplete.
For a person, search their full name with broad filters. The interface shows people results only in an appropriate unrestricted search scope. A source or genre filter intended for films can explain why a person row is absent.
Handle misspellings and corrections
When Odyssey offers Did you mean, choosing the proposed text starts that corrected search. It is a suggestion, so check that it still expresses what you intended.
Settings → Advanced → Smart Search allows small spelling mistakes when matching catalogue titles. That matching happens on the device, while ordinary catalogue searches can still use metadata providers. Enabling Smart Search is not a promise that every vague description or misspelling will resolve.
When results look incomplete
- No results: simplify the phrase and reset the filters. Confirm the source is connected and available to the profile.
- Wrong version: compare the release year and detail page, then check the playback source.
- Search reports a retryable error: use the offered retry control after checking the network. Empty results and a failed request are different conditions.
- A title is visible to another profile: source assignments, age restrictions and Adult protection can affect visibility. Do not bypass those controls to troubleshoot a search.
Will resetting search filters delete favourites? No. Filters change the search view, not your saved list.
Why can I read about something I cannot play? Metadata availability and playable source availability are separate. Follow the missing-media guide to identify which is absent.
