The player and recording service have different jobs

The Odyssey app lets you connect to the service and use the supported recording workflows. The Home DVR host performs the recording and needs to remain powered and reachable when a scheduled programme begins.

A desktop companion opening successfully does not prove that its service, storage and sources are configured. Installing the companion is one step; service setup and a real recording test are separate checks.

Prepare the host and storage

Use the official downloads and installation information for your host. Confirm the requirements of the package you intend to use. Do not assume a package for one operating system establishes support for another.

Choose storage the service can write to, with adequate free space and continued availability. Account for the host’s sleep, restart and network behaviour. A television being switched off is different from the recording host being switched off.

Use a trusted, reachable HTTPS connection

The documented app connection uses HTTPS. Its certificate must be trusted by the client and cover the address entered. An HTTP backend listening on port 3000 needs an appropriate TLS proxy; the player uses the proxy’s HTTPS address.

The trust control does not disable certificate validation. A connection working on the host computer may still fail from an Apple TV, another Wi-Fi network or outside the home. Test the route the player will actually use.

Permissions matter at the source

You need permission to access and record the source. A subscription or playable channel is not automatically permission to record it. The service and connected account must also expose the relevant capability.

Sharing is a separate permission. A recording setup does not automatically enable a shareable live link. The Live TV sharing guide describes that distinct workflow and its access checks.

Connect, make a small test, then schedule

Use Connect Odyssey to Home DVR for the exact connection controls and administrator prerequisites. Then make a short, permitted test recording and confirm it is present and playable before relying on an unattended schedule.

The recording guide explains scheduling and management. Use the recordings guide to review saved programmes and DVR troubleshooting when a recording is absent, incomplete or unplayable.

What this page does not promise

The guide version includes Home DVR. It does not include Cloud DVR, local Live Rewind or Catch Up. Recording reliability depends on the host, storage, source and network; this website does not establish that a particular customer’s recording problem has been fixed.

Check your installed build and the actual connected service before selecting Odyssey for a recording requirement.

Common questions

Does DVR mean recording directly on Apple TV?

No. The documented workflow connects the player to a separately configured Home DVR service.

Can I record any channel I can watch?

Do not assume that. Source capabilities, recording permissions, service configuration and account access must all support the recording.
