Before you begin
- Current invitation
- Eligible connected profile
- Own authorised source for the matching movie or episode
Before you join
A Watch Party invitation connects you to a shared movie or episode session. It does not provide the media. You need an eligible connected Odyssey profile and your own authorised source for the intended title.
Confirm the film edition or the exact season and episode with the host. A different cut can have a different runtime, so identical timestamps may not represent the same scene. Choose the profile whose history and restrictions you intend to use before accepting.
Use invitations from people you recognise. The link can carry session access, so avoid posting it publicly or including it in a support screenshot.
Accept from Friends & Invitations
- Open Settings → SharePlay & Watch Party → Friends & Invitations.
- Find the item under Watch Party Invitations.
- Read the sender, title and displayed expiry.
- Choose Accept to continue or Decline if you do not want to join.
- Follow the title and playback checks shown for the invitation.
A friend request and a Watch Party invitation are different. Accepting a friendship alone does not join a viewing session. If the in-app invitation offers Later, postponing it does not extend its expiry.
During the party
The host decides whether guests may use Play and Pause and Rewind and Seek. If a control is unavailable, ask the host to inspect Guest Controls and save the intended permission. Do not repeatedly restart playback to try to acquire host control.
Keep the same participating profile active while joining. Odyssey checks profile and account access throughout the action. Switching profiles or reconnecting a different account can invalidate the invitation’s current context.
Worked example
Jordan receives a friend invitation for season two, episode four. Before accepting, Jordan checks that the active profile has that episode from an authorised source. Jordan reads the sender and expiry, accepts and follows the joining flow.
Jordan can pause but cannot seek because the host enabled only Play and Pause. When Jordan needs to leave, they open the shared-viewing settings and choose Leave Watch Party. They have left that session without deleting the friendship or the series from their library.
Leave and return
Open Settings → SharePlay & Watch Party and use Leave Watch Party for the active guest session. The host’s equivalent session-ending control is Stop Party.
The Resume section may offer Resume Watch Party when an eligible unexpired session is available. Otherwise, use a current invitation from the host. An entry under Recent records a previous party; it does not prove that its link is still usable.
Troubleshooting and quick answers
The invitation expired: ask the host for the current invitation after they check that the party still exists.
The link is rejected: copy the complete invitation without editing it. Confirm it is an Odyssey sharing link from the intended person. Do not substitute a media-server address.
The party title is unavailable: check your own source access and the exact episode. The host’s invitation cannot grant their provider subscription.
I can join but playback fails: test the permitted source independently and compare the title edition with the host. Record the device, app version and error for support without including credentials.
Does joining give the host my account code? You should not need to send your full management code or source password. Use the invitation flow and its account checks.
