Before you begin
- Eligible connected Odyssey profiles
- Each participant’s authorised source for the same title
Watch the same title together
Watch Party creates shared viewing for a movie or episode. The host starts a session, shares its invitation and chooses whether guests can play, pause or seek. Each participant still needs an authorised source for the same title. Odyssey supplies no media.
A title-based Watch Party does not require a Home DVR connection. Live TV sharing is a different flow: it uses Home DVR and the live channel’s SharePlay entry point. Choose the flow for the content you intend to share.
Prepare before inviting
Use an eligible profile connected to your Odyssey account. The current source excludes profiles using Advanced Kids controls from Watch Party access. Account or profile changes can retire a pending party action.
Check that you can play the intended title yourself. For a series, confirm the exact season and episode. Ask guests to check their own authorised access and, where possible, the same cut or release. Different runtimes can make a shared timestamp land on different scenes.
A party invitation is not a source credential. Sending the link does not grant a provider subscription or media rights.
Start the party
- Open the movie or episode and choose Watch Party. On Apple TV, find it in the detail page’s ⋯ menu. You can also use Settings → SharePlay & Watch Party → Start Watch Party and choose a title.
- In the host lobby, confirm the title and episode information.
- Review Guest Controls: Play and Pause and Rewind and Seek.
- Choose Start Watch Party. The invitation becomes available after the session is created.
- Share the invitation or choose Invite Friends to select confirmed Odyssey friends.
- When ready, choose Done & Play.
Do not expect a usable invitation before Start Watch Party has completed. The lobby deliberately displays that it will be available after the party starts.
Control the session
The host can return through Settings → SharePlay & Watch Party. An active host session exposes Invites, QR & Controls. Use it to show the invitation again or adjust the guest permissions.
After changing Guest Controls for an existing session, choose Save Permissions. If guests cannot pause or seek, review these permissions before treating the player as broken.
The host has Stop Party. A guest has Leave Watch Party in the active-party settings. Leaving as a guest and stopping as host are different actions; closing a lobby alone is not the documented stop control.
Worked example
Charlie hosts a film for two friends. Everyone checks the title and source in advance. Charlie starts the party with Play and Pause enabled so anyone can pause for a break, but keeps Rewind and Seek disabled to avoid accidental jumps.
A guest needs to replay a scene. Charlie opens Invites, QR & Controls, enables Rewind and Seek and chooses Save Permissions. At the end, Charlie uses Stop Party. The friends do not need access to Charlie’s media-server password.
Recent parties and resuming
The settings section separates Active, Resume and Recent. Resume Watch Party appears only when a suitable unexpired party is available. A recent entry is not a guarantee that its old session still exists.
Recent episode entries can offer a fresh episode choice. You can use Remove from Recents on an entry or Clear Recent Watch Parties for the displayed history. Removing history is separate from stopping an active party.
Common problems
Start Watch Party is disabled: check the connected profile, account access and any active guest session. The current flow prevents a guest from taking over a party through the start action.
A guest cannot find a playable match: verify the title, season, episode and their own source. Creating more invitations will not add a missing stream.
Pause or seek is unavailable: review Guest Controls with the host. Save permission changes explicitly.
The invitation no longer works: check whether the session ended or the invitation expired. Open the current lobby and use its current invitation.
Playback is out of step: compare title editions and network conditions. If the problem continues, note the affected devices, title edition and visible error for support.
Quick answers
Do I need DVR? Not for a title-based Watch Party. Use the separate Live TV sharing guide for Home DVR requirements.
Does Series Lock start a party? No. Series Lock manages episode progress; Watch Party manages a viewing session.
