Start with what you want to watch

For a film night, choose the exact movie or episode and check that everyone can play an appropriate match. A different cut or release can have a different runtime, so matching the title name alone may not produce the same scene at the same timestamp.

A title-based Watch Party does not need Home DVR. Eligible connected profiles and each participant’s authorised source are the relevant prerequisites.

The host controls the invitation and permissions

The documented Watch Party flow lets the host decide whether guests can play and pause, and whether they can rewind and seek. The invitation becomes available after the session is created.

Use the Watch Party guide for the actual host controls and joining and leaving instructions for guests. An invitation does not supply a provider subscription, source credentials or media rights.

Live sharing has additional requirements

The app’s Live TV SharePlay flow is separate. It needs an available Home DVR service, a reachable trusted HTTPS connection and a source permitted for sharing. Playback permission alone does not establish sharing permission.

Check Share Live TV through Home DVR before inviting someone. The guide explains the conditional entry points, link availability and stop controls. Closing a share sheet is not the same as revoking a live link.

Keep the names in context

This page describes Odyssey’s documented controls. The presence of a SharePlay label is not a claim that every device supports an identical system-level FaceTime or Apple SharePlay workflow.

Check the guide’s platform and version notes for the flow you want. Account changes, profile restrictions, service availability and source access can affect whether an action appears or remains available.

Choose another feature when the task is different

Series Lock manages episode progress and viewing expectations. It does not start a Watch Party. A DVR recording stores an eligible programme through a recording service; it does not automatically create a shared viewing session.

Odyssey supplies no media. Choose sources you are allowed to access and use the appropriate recording or sharing permission for each action.

Common questions

Does every Watch Party require Home DVR?

No. A title-based film or episode Watch Party does not require Home DVR. Live TV sharing is the separate service-dependent flow.

Does an invitation let my friend use my provider account?

No. An invitation is not a provider credential or a grant of access or media rights.
